Range
The Uniden GMR2050-2C boasts a respectable 20-mile maximum range. Now, while 20 miles isn’t the longest two-way radio range available, it’s more than enough for pretty much any situation. You can still communicate with other people at a considerable distance, and 20 miles is plenty for hunting, hiking, sports, emergencies, family days out, camping, and most other activities you can think of. Just bear in mind that the more “stuff” there is between you and the person you’re communicating with, the shorter your range will be. Uniden test their two-way radios fairly, in natural conditions, using a mountain or hill peak to valley setup, giving them minimal interference from forests, built-up areas, and signal interference in everyday conditions. Remember that how far you’ll be able to communicate depends how clear your line of sight is, how built up or heavily wooded an area is, and how bad the weather is.
Channels
With these radios, you’ve got access to 22 channels, so it’s easy enough to find a quiet channel for you and your group to converse over. You’ve got 7 FRS only channels – 8 to 14. These don’t require a license, so you can grab your radios right out of the box and start chatting without the need for a license. Channels 1 through 7 are GRMS and FRS and channels 15 to 22 and GMRS only. For these 15 channels, you’ll need a GMRS license before you start transmitting, so make sure you get all your ducks in a row before you use those channels.
The presence of Channel Scan mode increases the convenience of these radios. Activate this function to make your radio continually scan all 22 channels. It searches for activity on every channel, and once it finds a transmission, it pauses on that channel until the activity ceases. Your radio then waits two seconds before resuming its scanning. Whether you need assistance from anybody within range or you are looking for a specific person or group, but aren’t sure of their channel, this is a useful feature. Once your radio stops on an active channel, just push your PTT button to transmit your message.
Make use of auto-squelch to automatically filter out weak signals, noise from interference, and weak transmissions for a quieter experience. If, however, you want to her every single transmission, no matter how weak, use the Monitor Mode instead.

Power
The Uniden GMR2050-2C is fairly energy efficient, and the batteries last for around 8 hours on a full charge. These radios have an ERP of just 0.6 Watts with channels 1 through 7 and 15 to 22. For channels 8 to 14, this figure drops to 0.46 Watts. Remember that ERP refers to effective radiated power. This means the power that the antenna emits for useful communication. It is not comparable to conducted power, which is usually much higher. Because these radios draw so little power via the antenna, they maximize the lifespan of your batteries.
Each of these radios use three rechargeable AAA batteries, so you won’t have to keep replacing them. This saves you money, increases convenience, and is much better for the environment. It’s a smart plan to have one set fully charged in the radio and another charged set or two stashed in your backpack or bag so you’re never without power. And, this two-way radio double pack comes with six of these rechargeable batteries.
To recharge the units, simply attach one branch of the included Y-split cable to each radio’s charging port, then connect the USB connector to a suitable port on your PC, your mobile phone charger, or any other USB-compatible device.
Design
Lightweight. Compact. Easy to use. They fit snugly in an adult palm and are small enough for children to grip easily, too, making them an outstanding two-way radio choice for families with youngsters. Stay safe and stay in touch easily, whether you’re fighting zombies, dodging looters, or just enjoyinig a day out with the family.
There aren’t many whistles and bells on these radios – but they are robust, durable, and compact. Perfect for families, ideal for any situation where space and weight are crucial considerations. They offer a respectable range, reliable performance, easy charging, and are user-friendly. And, the Uniden GMR2050-2C won’t break the bank.
