The Uniden GMR5089 six pack is an all purpose two-way radio system meant for individuals looking for a rugged but easy-to-carry device for camping or emergency situations. This radio set is also perfect for people going on boating trips, because of the durability of the design and the inclusion of waterproofing. Everything you could want and/or need with a two way radio set is included in this package for an affordable price. No need to make extra purchases for headsets or accessories either, they come with the bundle.
Here is a brief list of what is included with this radio set:
- 6 radios
- 6 rechargeable batteries
- 3 Charging station
- 6 headsets
- 6 carabiner style belt clips
The maximum range for the Uniden GMR5089 is 50 miles. For channels 1-7 and channels 15-22, the maximum range is 18 miles. With the use of the boost function, however, those two ranges expand to the full 50. Channels 8-14, the FRS channels, have a maximum range of around 5 miles (the boost function is not utilized by the FRS channels).
The radios come with rechargeable NiMH battery packs (with a 5/5/90 duty cycle) which are recharged using the charging cradle (included). The average battery life for these batteries is around 10 hours, assuming the boost function is not being used. It should be noted, however, that this radio set does not accept loose batteries as some radios do. This is because of the inherent design of the unit.
This radio system includes 22 possible operating channels. Six of those channels (8-14) are FRS channels. The others are all GMRS channels, meant for longer range communications. There are also 7 NOAA weather channels which are included. These weather channels are extremely useful in keeping you up to date on changes in the weather or for emergency communications which may be taking place. With the addition of the 38 sub-audible tons and 104 DCS codes, the functionality of these radios for private communications is expanded even further.
Due to the way these radios were designed, they are able to float on water. Better still, they can be submerged for up to 3 meters for a time limit of up to 30 minutes before sustaining any serious damage. With the included rubber seals and the jack cover, you never have to worry about water leaking on.
The GMR5089 also includes an emergency strobe functionality. On the face of the unit is a small LED which can be activated when necessary and which will function as a strobe during emergency situations or to alert others to your location.
This radio set also comes with a standard 3 year warranty from Uniden. If there are any inherent flaws or functional damage resulting from the design of the units, Uniden will either fix or replace the units at no charge to you for up to 3 years. Just keep your purchase information. This warranty is void if the units are modified or programmed by anyone besides a qualified Uniden employee.
Regardless of your needs for a two way radio set, the GMR5089 is a great choice. Given the additional functionality without an added cost, it is great for a variety of situations. Better yet, the fact that the radios are submersible in up to 3 feet of water with no damage (and float) means you won’t have to worry about them falling overboard and getting lost on your next boating trip either. The GMR 5089 is a great choice, especially at the price point it is listed at, and it is a be-all end-all radio for individuals who are on the market looking for one.
