With a 50-mile maximum range, the Uniden GMR5095-2CKHS two-way radio double pack lets you stay in touch with your group, even at huge distances. There are times when you may need to communicate over vast distances, either with members of your party (perhaps you’ve sent them out scouting or on a crucial supply run), or with random strangers with whom you share a common goal or interest (perhaps you need info about conditions in their neck of the woods, or maybe you need directions). Well, if you’ve got optimal topographical and atmospheric conditions, with few obstructions, and you’re operating on a GMRS channel with boost mode activated, you can reach up to 50 miles. On the FRS channels, you’ll achieve a maximum transmission distance of 5 miles, and these channels will drain less battery, too. Just remember, the rougher the terrain, the worse the weather, the heavier the traffic, and the more built up your locale, the shorter your range will be.
Getting caught in torrential rain is miserable, and getting caught in a blizzard can be life-threatening. For this reason, the Uniden GMR5095-2CKHS pulls double duty as a weather alert radio, giving you access to 7 NOAA weather channels. Simply tune into your local station, and your radio will bring you weather alerts as soon as they are issued. In this way, you can greatly reduce the chance of Mother Nature catching you by surprise with adverse weather. Stay alert, stay prepared, stay safe.
Thanks to JIS level 7 waterproofing, these impressive two-way radios are submersible. That’s right – even if you drop them off the side of a boat, they can stay submersed for 30 minutes. And, if you do happen to drop one in deep water, it doesn’t matter: The radio bobs back to the surface and floats until you scoop it up. Just remember to keep all the ports covered and rubber seals in place to ensure your radio remains waterproof.
Operate your radios without a license with the 7 FRS channels. These 7 channels offer a maximum of a 5-mile transmission range, which is more than adequate for many people. However, if you do want to make the most of this radio’s range capabilities, you’ll need the appropriate license to transmit on any of the 15 included GMRS channels.
When you want to communicate with your group with fewer distractions, you can make use of any of the 142 standard privacy codes. And, for total privacy, providing your whole group has compatible radios, you can switch to Group Mode. This blocks all other transmissions and stops outsiders overhearing your group’s communications. Simply choose the channel, select one of the 142 Group Mode privacy codes, set everybody up with a nickname, and you’re set.
You can take it one step further and use Direct Call to contact one or more members of your party without the rest of your group being able to hear. Direct Call works like a cell phone call and increases privacy.
These two-way radios come with rechargeable NiMH batteries. You can recharge the radios via the docking cradle and microUSB AC cable. Thanks to its energy efficiency, with low ERP transmissions and Auto Power Save mode, this radio offers a long battery life, with up to 10 hours of use from a single full charge. And, because you don’t always have access to a charging point, you can switch out the rechargeable batteries for disposable alkaline ones. We advise keeping a couple of packs of AA alkaline batteries in your kit for emergencies. Just remember never to attempt to recharge disposable alkaline batteries, as it can damage your radios.
With an abundance of power-saving features, your batteries should last. However, to maximize battery life, you can only use FRS channels when your group is in range. Only using the weather alert feature is another great way of extending battery life. However, for those times when you absolutely have to get a transmission the maximum distance, or you need to push it through a lot of interference or obstructions, you can use the Boost feature It draws more power temporarily, but helps to boost your transmission.
Light your way with the brilliant LED flashlight that’s built right into these two-way radios. Offering brilliant illumination while drawing minimal power, the flashlights can be set to strobe an SOS in an emergency.
