It’s fully submersible to JIS8 standards, which means it can be submersed for up to 5 feet for an hour at a time without taking damage. It’s important to note that the radio is only waterproof if all the ports are fully closed and sealed tight and the antenna is firmly attached. Weather Channels

As well as a huge range of VHF channels, the MHS126 gives you access to NOAA weather channels. With 9 weather channels at your fingertips, you can reduce the risk of Mother Nature taking you unawares. The Weather Alert function listens for transmissions from the last weather channel you used, once every seven seconds, and gives you an audible alert if a weather warning is issued.

Dual and Triple Watch Plus

With dual and triple watch modes, you can set your radio to scan a weather channel, a coast guard distress/hailing channel, and a standard marine channel. In dual watch mode, the radio checks channel 16 every two seconds. In triple mode, the radio checks channel 16 followed by channel 9 every two seconds. It’s important to note that every private vessel must monitor channel 16 when they are underway. Therefore, having and using dual or triple watch mode is essential.

Power

The Uniden MHS126 comes supplied with a lithium ion polymer battery pack that recharges via one of the two included adapters – one DC and one AC/DC. How long the battery lasts depends on how much use the radio gets, but it does boast battery saving features to conserve power. Once you’ve mounted the charging cradle and chosen an adapter, simply connect the adapter and drop the radio in the cradle. The radio will still operate while charging. The large display also has a visual battery level indicator, so you’ll know when it’s time to connect the charger. Store four AA alkaline batteries in the included alkaline battery tray to use as backup for your lithium ion polymer battery pack. Never insert disposable batteries into the radio without the battery tray, as you’ll risk harming your radio. You can also use lithium ion disposable or rechargeables as emergency backups.

Safety

If you’re out on the water at night or in low light and you need help or need to alert someone to your location, you can set the radio to flash an SOS using its bright, powerful LEDs. If you just need some extra light, you can switch the radio to flashlight mode.

Channel Scan

You can set your radio to continually scan all channels you’ve saved in your radio’s memory. It pauses every time it detects activity on a channel. You can make a transmission or manually turn off the scan or ignore the active channel and let the radio continue to scan.

Auto Squelch

The MHS126 boasts three different levels of squelch to choose from. You can turn it off and receive every transmission, no matter how weak, remove the weakest signals, or remove all but the strongest transmissions. This last option is useful if you only want to hear from vessels very close by, but you do risk missing important transmissions coming on a slightly weaker signal.
