A gadget that I am simply fond of but also addicted is the laptop. I’m no fan of Toshiba’s products but I had the chance to get my hands on a multimedia / home computing Toshiba L 650  – 14 E and it made an impression on me as it looks good ( a thing that Toshiba has already accustomed all us to ) and performs just like it should in the segment it was manufactured for. Many consider it a notebook and I am one of them because even if it offers some connectivity options, its performances are those of a notebook.

The motherboard, even if it uses the older HM 55 Express chipset from Intel still packs a punch and together with the Intel i3 – 330 M microprocessor at a standard working frequency of 2.13 MHz it is sure something to take into notice. What I wanted to see about this laptop was if it can perform at least satisfactory when it comes to gaming and some video / photo editing software. I actually had to install Ubuntu 11.04 because the notebook itself comes out of the shelf with Free DOS installed so you can’t really say that it has an operating system. This meant a lot, but given the low price, Toshiba has managed to sell this device, that’s not bad as a Windows 7 basic kit would add to the price a rather intriguing amount of monye, that many wouldn’t pay as there are other free or cheaper options that offer the same or even more functionality.

What matters most is that once Ubuntu 11.04 installed, I started installing some games and unpacking some tweaks that are not that picky when it comes to resources, but demanding at the same time. The graphics chipset that the device features is an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5145 with a dedicated 512 MB video memory module which I hoped to help the laptop perform better than similar products in the same range. Before declaring my opinions about the gaming performances of this notebook, which will be done in the second part of this small so called review, I want to clear a small aspect and that is the performances of the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5145. This GPU is a mid range product from ATI and is intended to provide HD experience and basic photo and video editing. In the following part I will talk about the actual gaming performances of this device.
